Product overview
What is 1,2,3-Trichloro Benzene?
1,2,3-Trichloro Benzene (1,2,3-TCB) is the vicinal isomer of trichlorobenzene, in which all three chlorine atoms sit on adjacent ring positions. It is used as a chemical intermediate for dichloroaniline chemistry, as a high-boiling solvent and as a dye carrier.
With the formula C6H3Cl3 (CAS 87-61-6), 1,2,3-TCB is a white to off-white crystalline solid melting at about 53 °C and boiling near 218 °C, practically insoluble in water but readily soluble in aromatic and chlorinated solvents. Unlike the 1,2,4 isomer, it is a solid at ambient temperature and is normally supplied as flakes or melted on site.
It arises alongside 1,2,4-TCB in the chlorination of benzene and dichlorobenzene, and is separated by fractional distillation and crystallisation. The vicinal substitution pattern is what makes it useful: ammonolysis gives 2,3-dichloroaniline, an intermediate that the 1,2,4 isomer cannot supply.
How it is made
Benzene or dichlorobenzene is chlorinated over a Lewis acid catalyst, producing a mixture of trichlorobenzene isomers. The 1,2,3 isomer is recovered from that mixture by fractional distillation followed by crystallisation, then flaked or packed molten to specification.
What that means for your process
- Tightly controlled 1,2,4-isomer content, checked by GC
- Low moisture and low acidity for stable storage
- Consistent setting point for reliable melting and charging
- Flaked or molten form to suit your charging system

Safety
Is 1,2,3-Trichloro Benzene hazardous?
Yes. 1,2,3-TCB is harmful if swallowed, causes skin and eye irritation, may irritate the respiratory tract, and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. It is a combustible solid and, when melted for charging, releases vapour that must be controlled.
1,2,3-TCB should be stored in sealed bags or drums in a cool, dry, ventilated place away from heat, ignition sources, strong oxidisers and strong bases, and handled with chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, protective clothing and dust or vapour respiratory protection. Molten product must be handled in closed, heated and properly vented systems. Because of its aquatic toxicity, spill containment matters as much as personal protection. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.
