Product overview

What is Ortho Nitro Aniline?

Ortho Nitro Aniline (2-nitroaniline, ONA) is an orange-yellow aromatic nitro amine used mainly as a dyestuff intermediate and as the principal precursor to o-phenylenediamine, which in turn becomes the benzimidazole ring found in fungicides, anthelmintics and rubber chemicals.

With the formula C6H6N2O2 (CAS 88-74-4), ONA is a crystalline solid made commercially by reacting 2-chloronitrobenzene with excess aqueous ammonia in an autoclave. The reaction is strongly exothermic, so it is run under close temperature control at around 180 °C and roughly 4 MPa.

Because the amino group sits next to an electron-withdrawing nitro group, ONA diazotises to a stable diazonium salt and reduces cleanly to the diamine — the two reactions that account for almost all of its industrial consumption.

How it is made

2-Chloronitrobenzene is heated with a large excess of strong aqueous ammonia in an autoclave, the temperature raised to about 180 °C, and the product filtered and washed after the ammonia is recovered.

What that means for your process

  • Reactive amino group for diazotisation and coupling
  • Nitro group available for clean catalytic reduction to the diamine
  • Isomer and residual chloronitrobenzene controlled to grade, checked by GC
  • Low moisture (0.5% max) for stable storage and handling

Applications

What is Ortho Nitro Aniline used for?

ONA is used almost entirely as a chemical intermediate. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:

Dyes & pigments

A classic dyestuff intermediate, listed in the Colour Index as C.I. 37025 and used as a diazo component.

  • Diazo component for azoic and azo dyes
  • Intermediate for pigment and dye bases
  • Used in orange and red shade ranges

o-Phenylenediamine & benzimidazoles

The largest single outlet. Reduction gives o-phenylenediamine, the gateway to the benzimidazole ring.

  • Precursor to o-phenylenediamine (OPDA)
  • Route to benzimidazole fungicides and anthelmintics
  • Used for rubber accelerators and antioxidants

Agrochemicals & fine chemicals

Feeds crop-protection and fine-chemical synthesis through the diamine and through direct derivatisation.

  • Intermediate for selected fungicides
  • Building block for fine chemicals and custom synthesis

Process route

How is Ortho Nitro Aniline used downstream?

The dominant route reduces the nitro group to give o-phenylenediamine, which is then cyclised into the benzimidazole ring used across fungicides, anthelmintics and rubber chemicals. In the colourant route, the same molecule is instead diazotised and coupled to build azo dyes.

Safety

Is Ortho Nitro Aniline hazardous?

Yes. 2-Nitroaniline is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, may cause organ damage through prolonged or repeated exposure, and is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Like other nitroanilines it can cause methaemoglobinaemia, so skin and respiratory protection matter. With correct PPE, ventilation and containment it is safely handled in industry.

ONA should be stored in sealed containers in a cool, dry, ventilated place away from heat, strong acids and oxidisers — it reacts vigorously with concentrated sulfuric acid at high temperature and emits nitrogen oxides on decomposition. Prevent release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.

Signal word: Danger

Toxic by ingestion, skin contact and inhalation · organ damage on repeated exposure

Safe-handling essentials

  • Gloves, goggles and respiratory protection at all times
  • Work with local exhaust ventilation; avoid dust generation
  • Skin absorption is a real route — change contaminated clothing at once
  • Keep containers sealed, cool, dry and out of direct light
  • Store away from heat, strong acids and oxidisers
  • Never allow release to drains, soil or waterways
  • Transport as UN 1661 — a regulated dangerous good
