What is 2,5-Dichlorophenol?

2,5-Dichlorophenol — 25DCP — is a white to off-white crystalline solid with a sharp phenolic odour, carrying chlorine atoms at the 2 and 5 positions of a phenol ring.

The chlorines make the hydroxyl group markedly more acidic than in phenol itself, so 25DCP dissolves readily in dilute alkali and forms phenolate salts that alkylate and acylate cleanly. That reactivity is the basis of the aryloxy ether and ester intermediates built from it.

Storage and guidelines

  • 01Store in tightly closed original packaging in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store.
  • 02Keep below 30°C — the product softens and cakes as it approaches its melting range.
  • 03Keep away from heat, ignition sources, and direct sunlight.

Handling precautions

25DCP is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin, or if inhaled, and causes severe skin burns and eye damage. It is for industrial use by trained personnel only.

Chlorophenols are readily absorbed through intact skin, and absorption through a burn or abrasion can be rapid. Chemical-resistant gloves, coveralls, face protection, and respiratory protection are required.

Control dust during bag emptying and charging, and use local exhaust ventilation at all transfer and melting points.

The product is very toxic to aquatic organisms with long-lasting effects and imparts taste and odour to water at extremely low concentrations. Contain all spills and dispose of waste through licensed routes.

What is 2,5-Dichlorophenol used for?

It is an intermediate for agrochemical, pharmaceutical, and dye synthesis, typically through etherification or acylation of the phenolic hydroxyl. It is also used as an analytical reference standard for chlorophenol testing.

Why are chlorophenols more acidic than phenol?

The chlorine atoms withdraw electron density from the ring and stabilise the negative charge on the phenolate ion once the hydroxyl proton is lost. That is why 25DCP dissolves readily in dilute caustic and forms salts that alkylate cleanly.

How does 2,5-DCP differ from 2,4-DCP?

They share the formula C6H4Cl2O but place the second chlorine differently. 2,4-DCP is produced in very large volume for phenoxy herbicides, while 2,5-DCP serves narrower pharmaceutical, dye, and specialty routes. They are not interchangeable.

Is it soluble in water?

Only slightly in neutral water, but it dissolves readily in dilute sodium hydroxide as the phenolate salt, and in alcohols, ether, and acetone. Alkaline dissolution is the usual route into further chemistry.

Why does the flake cake in the bag?

The melting point is only 56–58°C, so warm storage or transport softens the flakes and causes fusing. Keeping the store below 30°C, palletised and out of direct sun, prevents most caking without affecting assay.

Can it be supplied molten?

Yes, for bulk users. Molten supply in heated tankers avoids dust exposure and handling losses, but the receiving site needs dedicated heated lines, temperature control, and vapour extraction.

What purity do you supply?

Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 99% with isomer content at or below 0.5% and moisture at or below 0.3%. Tighter specifications can be manufactured to order.

Why is the odour threshold relevant?

Chlorophenols are detectable by taste and smell in water at extremely low concentrations, far below any toxic level. This makes even minor releases a serious environmental and public-nuisance issue, so containment is essential.
