Product overview

What is Nitro Benzene?

Nitro Benzene (nitrobenzene) is the simplest nitroaromatic and one of the largest-volume aromatic intermediates in the chemical industry. Almost all of it is hydrogenated to aniline, which in turn feeds MDI for polyurethanes, rubber chemicals, dyes and agrochemicals.

With the formula C6H5NO2 (CAS 98-95-3), nitrobenzene is a pale yellow oily liquid with a bitter-almond odour, freezing at about 6 °C and boiling at about 211 °C. It is made by nitrating benzene with mixed nitric and sulfuric acid.

For aniline producers the critical impurities are dinitrobenzene, nitrophenols and residual benzene, because they affect catalyst life and aniline quality — which is why nitrobenzene is specified by impurity profile as closely as by assay.

How it is made

Benzene is nitrated continuously with mixed nitric and sulfuric acid. The organic phase is separated, washed to remove acids and nitrophenols, and stripped of residual benzene before storage.

What that means for your process

  • Clean feed for catalytic hydrogenation to aniline
  • Low dinitrobenzene and nitrophenols, checked by GC
  • Low moisture and acidity for stable storage
  • Bulk liquid supply in tankers and ISO tanks

Applications

What is Nitro Benzene used for?

Nitrobenzene is used almost entirely as a chemical intermediate. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:

Aniline & polyurethanes

The main use. Hydrogenated to aniline, which is condensed with formaldehyde to MDA and phosgenated to MDI for polyurethane foams and coatings.

  • Feedstock for aniline
  • Route to MDA and MDI
  • Polyurethane foams, elastomers and coatings

Rubber chemicals & dyes

Aniline from nitrobenzene feeds rubber antioxidants, accelerators and a large family of dyes and pigments.

  • Rubber antioxidants and accelerators
  • Azo and sulfur dye intermediates
  • Indigo and pigment intermediates

Agrochemicals & fine chemicals

Chlorination and further nitration give m-chloronitrobenzene and m-dinitrobenzene for agro and fine-chemical intermediates.

  • m-Chloronitrobenzene and m-chloroaniline
  • m-Dinitrobenzene and m-phenylenediamine
  • Specialty solvent in some processes

Process route

How is nitrobenzene used to make MDI?

Nitrobenzene is hydrogenated to aniline. Aniline is condensed with formaldehyde to methylene dianiline (MDA), which is then phosgenated to methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) — the isocyanate behind most rigid polyurethane foams.

Safety

Is Nitro Benzene hazardous?

Yes. Nitrobenzene is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, is suspected of causing cancer, may damage fertility, and causes damage to the blood (methaemoglobinaemia) through prolonged or repeated exposure. It is also harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

Nitrobenzene should be stored in sealed containers in a cool, ventilated place away from heat, strong oxidisers, reducing agents and strong bases, and handled in closed systems with chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, protective clothing and suitable respiratory protection. It is readily absorbed through the skin. Prevent release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.

Signal word: Danger

Toxic by ingestion, skin contact and inhalation · suspected carcinogen · may damage fertility · damages the blood

Safe-handling essentials

  • Closed handling systems wherever possible
  • Chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing at all times
  • Vapour respirator; use local exhaust ventilation
  • Avoid all skin contact — nitrobenzene is absorbed through the skin
  • Store away from oxidisers, reducing agents and strong bases
  • Never allow release to drains, soil or waterways
  • Transport as UN 1662, class 6.1, packing group II
