Product overview

What is 2,6-Difluoro Benzonitrile?

2,6-Difluoro Benzonitrile (2,6-DFBN) is a fluorinated aromatic nitrile with two reactive handles: the nitrile group, which is hydrolysed to the amide that benzoylurea insecticides are built from, and the two ring fluorines, which are activated for displacement by phenoxides in high-performance polymer synthesis.

With the formula C7H3F2N (CAS 1897-52-5), 2,6-DFBN is a white to pale yellow crystalline solid melting at about 26 °C and boiling near 198 °C. It is only slightly soluble in water — around 1.9 g/L — but dissolves freely in alcohols, ketones and aromatic solvents.

Its dominant commercial outlet is 2,6-difluorobenzamide, the acyl half of diflubenzuron and the whole benzoylurea insect growth regulator family. A second, growing outlet is polymer chemistry, where the nitrile group activates both fluorines strongly enough for clean step-growth polymerisation with bisphenols.

How it is made

2,6-Difluorobenzonitrile is made from 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile by halogen exchange with potassium fluoride in a polar aprotic solvent at elevated temperature. The crude product is washed free of salts, dried and purified by distillation or crystallisation, then flaked or packed for dispatch.

What that means for your process

  • Low residual 2,6-dichloro and mono-fluoro analogue, checked by GC
  • Low moisture — the nitrile hydrolyses slowly in the presence of water
  • Consistent setting point for reliable melting and charging
  • Crystal, flake or molten supply to suit your charging system

Applications

What is 2,6-Difluoro Benzonitrile used for?

2,6-DFBN is used almost entirely as a chemical intermediate. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:

Benzoylurea insecticides

The dominant outlet: hydrolysis to 2,6-difluorobenzamide, then condensation to the urea.

  • Hydrolysis to 2,6-difluorobenzamide
  • Diflubenzuron with 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate
  • Teflubenzuron, hexaflumuron and lufenuron routes

High-performance polymers

Both ring fluorines are activated by the nitrile, giving clean step-growth polymerisation.

  • Poly(aryl ether nitrile)s with bisphenols
  • Nitrile-bearing engineering thermoplastics
  • High-temperature membrane and film materials

Pharmaceuticals & fine chemicals

A difluorinated aromatic handle for amides, amidines and heterocycles.

  • 2,6-Difluorobenzamide and benzoyl chloride derivatives
  • Fluorinated heterocycle synthesis
  • Custom difluoroaromatic building blocks

Process route

How is 2,6-DFBN used to make diflubenzuron?

The largest single outlet for 2,6-DFBN is the benzoylurea route. The nitrile is hydrolysed under controlled conditions to 2,6-difluorobenzamide, which is then condensed with 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate to give diflubenzuron — the insect growth regulator that blocks chitin synthesis in larvae.

Safety

Is 2,6-Difluoro Benzonitrile hazardous?

Yes, though less severely than the nitroaromatics. 2,6-DFBN is harmful if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, causes skin and eye irritation, and may cause respiratory irritation. It is a combustible solid with a flash point around 80 °C.

2,6-DFBN should be stored in sealed drums or bags in a cool, dry, ventilated place away from heat, moisture, strong bases and strong oxidisers, and handled with chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing, with local exhaust ventilation where dust or vapour can form. Molten product must be handled in closed, heated and properly vented systems. Prevent release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.

Safe-handling essentials

  • Chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing
  • Local exhaust ventilation where dust or vapour can form
  • Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact
  • Handle molten material only in closed, heated, vented systems
  • Keep drums and bags sealed, cool and dry — moisture hydrolyses the nitrile
  • Store away from strong bases and strong oxidisers
  • Never allow release to drains, soil or waterways
  • Confirm the transport classification on the SDS before despatch

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from buyers specifying 2,6-DFBN for insecticide, polymer and pharmaceutical production.

What is 2,6-Difluoro Benzonitrile used for?

2,6-DFBN is used mainly to make 2,6-difluorobenzamide, the acyl building block of diflubenzuron and the other benzoylurea insect growth regulators such as teflubenzuron, hexaflumuron and lufenuron. It is also used as a monomer for poly(aryl ether nitrile) engineering polymers and as a difluoroaromatic intermediate in pharmaceutical synthesis.

What is the CAS number of 2,6-DFBN?

The CAS number is 1897-52-5 and the molecular formula is C7H3F2N, with a molecular weight of 139.10 g/mol. Its EC number is 217-589-7.

How is 2,6-Difluoro Benzonitrile made?

It is made from 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile by halogen exchange with potassium fluoride in a polar aprotic solvent at elevated temperature, then washed free of salts, dried and purified by distillation or crystallisation.

Is 2,6-Difluoro Benzonitrile hazardous?

Yes. It is harmful if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, causes skin and eye irritation, and may cause respiratory irritation. It is also a combustible solid. Handle it with PPE and ventilation and keep it dry; we supply a full MSDS with every order.

Why does 2,6-DFBN work as a polymer monomer?

The nitrile group withdraws electron density from the ring and activates both ortho fluorines towards nucleophilic aromatic substitution. That lets it react cleanly with bisphenols in a step-growth polymerisation to give poly(aryl ether nitrile)s, which keep their strength at temperatures where ordinary thermoplastics fail.

How should 2,6-DFBN be stored?

In sealed drums or bags in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store, away from heat, moisture, strong bases and strong oxidisers. Because it melts at about 26 °C it can fuse in warm weather, which is cosmetic rather than a quality problem; molten material must be kept in closed, heated and vented systems.

Do you provide COA and MSDS for 2,6-DFBN?

Yes, we provide a batch-specific COA and MSDS with every order, plus technical support on request.

Do you supply and export 2,6-Difluoro Benzonitrile?

Yes, we supply 2,6-DFBN across India and export internationally with complete documentation, sourced from reliable manufacturers.
