5-Chloro-2-Methylaniline
A high-purity chlorinated toluidine — known in the dye trade as Fast Red KB Base — supplied for azo dye, pigment and agrochemical intermediate synthesis.
What is 5-Chloro-2-Methylaniline?
5-Chloro-2-methylaniline — 5-chloro-o-toluidine, known in the dye trade as Fast Red KB Base — is a low-melting solid that may be supplied as a solid or liquid depending on temperature.
The methyl group beside the amine and the chlorine opposite the methyl give a classic colour base: it diazotises cleanly and couples into strong red shades with good fastness, which is why it has long been used for azoic dyeing and red pigments.
At Chelora Agrochem, it is refined with isomer content, colour and moisture held to specification for consistent shade from batch to batch.

Storage and guidelines
- 01Store in tightly closed original packaging in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store.
- 02Keep below 20 °C where possible — the product softens and cakes as it approaches its melting range.
- 03Protect from air and light — aromatic amines darken slowly on oxidation.
- 04Segregate from strong oxidising agents, acids and acid chlorides.
- 05Keep packaging palletised and dry, and re-seal opened packaging promptly.
- 06Prevent any release to drains, surface water or soil — the product is toxic to aquatic life.
Handling precautions
5-Chloro-2-methylaniline is a toxic chlorinated aromatic amine that is harmful by inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. It is for industrial use by trained personnel only.
Aromatic amines are absorbed through intact skin and can affect the blood by forming methaemoglobin. Chemical-resistant gloves, coveralls, eye protection and, where needed, respiratory protection are required.
Control dust during bag or drum emptying and charging, and use local exhaust ventilation at all transfer points.
The product melts near room temperature, so drums may contain solid, liquid or a mixture. Warm gently and uniformly before use and avoid skin contact with the liquid phase.
The product is toxic to aquatic life. Contain all spills and dispose of waste through licensed chemical waste routes.
Refer to the full Safety Data Sheet for exposure limits, spill response and first-aid measures before use.
Frequently asked questions
Mainly as a dye and pigment colour base — it is Fast Red KB Base — and also as an agrochemical and pharmaceutical intermediate.
It is the traditional trade name for this amine in azoic dyeing, where it is diazotised and coupled on the fibre to give fast red shades.
It melts close to room temperature, so it can arrive solid, liquid or part-melted depending on the weather. This does not affect quality; warm the drum evenly before use.
Only slightly. It dissolves readily in alcohols, ethers and aromatic solvents, and in dilute mineral acid, so reactions are normally run in organic media or after acid dissolution.
Aromatic amines oxidise slowly on contact with air and light, forming coloured impurities. Assay is usually unaffected, but sealed, cool, dark storage preserves colour for sensitive applications.
Standard grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 99% with isomer content at or below 0.5% and moisture at or below 0.3%. Tighter specifications can be produced to a customer specification sheet.
25 kg and 200 kg drums. Samples are available for trial and development work.
Yes. Like other aromatic amines it is toxic by several routes, absorbed through skin and hazardous to aquatic life. Trained personnel, engineering controls and full PPE are required per the Safety Data Sheet.
Yes. Every batch is dispatched with a Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet covering assay, impurity profile, moisture and appearance.
