Product overview

What is Para Chloro Aniline?

Para Chloro Aniline (4-chloroaniline, PCA) is a chlorinated aromatic amine and one of the most widely used aniline intermediates in crop protection, pharmaceuticals and colours. It is the starting point for the antiseptic chlorhexidine, for fungicides such as pyraclostrobin, for benzoylurea insecticides such as diflubenzuron and for phenylurea herbicides — in every case the para chlorine is carried into the finished molecule.

With the formula C6H6ClN (CAS 106-47-8), PCA is a white to pale-yellow crystalline solid that melts at about 70 °C and darkens with air and light. It is not made by chlorinating aniline, which over-chlorinates; instead it is produced by reducing 4-nitrochlorobenzene — the same nitro-reduction logic used for Para Toluidine.

Because the amino group is free and the chlorine sits para to it, PCA converts cleanly into 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate, 4-chlorophenylhydrazine, biguanides and diazonium salts — which is why agrochemical and API producers specify it by assay, aniline content and isomer purity.

How it is made

Chlorobenzene is nitrated and the para isomer, 4-nitrochlorobenzene, is separated from the ortho isomer. It is then reduced — by catalytic hydrogenation or iron (Béchamp) reduction — to 4-chloroaniline, which is purified by distillation and flaked.

What that means for your process

  • Free amino group for phosgenation, diazotisation and condensation
  • Para chlorine retained intact through downstream steps
  • Aniline and ortho / meta isomers controlled to grade, checked by GC
  • Low moisture and colour for clean reactions and stable storage

Applications

What is Para Chloro Aniline used for?

PCA is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and dyes. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:

Agrochemicals

The largest use. PCA supplies the 4-chlorophenyl group found in many crop-protection actives.

  • Strobilurin fungicides such as pyraclostrobin, via 4-chlorophenylhydrazine
  • Benzoylurea insecticides such as diflubenzuron
  • Urea and organophosphate herbicides — monolinuron, anilofos

Pharmaceuticals & antiseptics

A long-established entry point for chlorinated drug and biocide molecules.

  • Key raw material for chlorhexidine
  • Triclocarban, made together with 3,4-dichloroaniline
  • Building block in API and custom synthesis

Dyes & fine chemicals

Diazotised and coupled to give azo colours with good fastness.

  • Diazo component for azo dyes and pigments
  • Reagent and building block in research and analytical work

Process route

How is Para Chloro Aniline used downstream?

PCA enters a synthesis through its amino group. It is converted to an isocyanate, hydrazine, biguanide or diazonium salt, that reactive handle is coupled or cyclised, and the para chlorine rides through untouched into the finished active or colour.

Safety

Is Para Chloro Aniline hazardous?

Yes. 4-Chloroaniline is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, may cause an allergic skin reaction, may cause cancer and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Like other aromatic amines it is absorbed through the skin and can cause methaemoglobinaemia. With correct PPE, ventilation and containment it is safely handled in industry.

PCA should be stored in sealed containers in a cool, dry, dark and well-ventilated place away from acids, acid chlorides, anhydrides and strong oxidisers. It darkens with air and light, so keep packs closed between uses. Prevent any release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.

Safe-handling essentials

  • Chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing — PCA is absorbed through the skin
  • Handle flakes with dust control and local exhaust; use respiratory protection where dust or vapour may form
  • Keep containers sealed, dry and out of direct light
  • Store away from acids, acid chlorides, anhydrides and oxidisers
  • Wash thoroughly after handling; no eating or drinking in work areas
  • Never allow release to drains, soil or waterways
  • Transport as UN 2018 — a regulated dangerous good

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from buyers specifying Para Chloro Aniline for agrochemical, pharmaceutical and dye production.

What is Para Chloro Aniline used for?

PCA is used as an intermediate for agrochemicals such as pyraclostrobin, diflubenzuron, monolinuron and anilofos, for the antiseptic chlorhexidine, and for azo dyes, pigments and fine chemicals.

What is the CAS number of Para Chloro Aniline?

The CAS number is 106-47-8 and the molecular formula is C6H6ClN. It is also known as PCA, 4-chloroaniline, p-chloroaniline or 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene.

How is Para Chloro Aniline manufactured?

By reducing 4-nitrochlorobenzene, usually by catalytic hydrogenation. The nitro compound is made by nitrating chlorobenzene and separating the para isomer; direct chlorination of aniline is not used because it over-chlorinates.

Is Para Chloro Aniline hazardous?

Yes. It is toxic by ingestion, skin contact and inhalation, may cause cancer, is a skin sensitiser and is very toxic to aquatic life. It must be handled with proper PPE, dust control and containment; we supply a full MSDS with every order.

What is the difference between PCA and the dichloroanilines?

PCA carries one chlorine, para to the amine. 2,4-Dichloroaniline and 3,4-dichloroaniline carry two chlorines and lead to different actives — 3,4-DCA to diuron, linuron and propanil, for example. We supply all three.

How should PCA be stored?

In sealed bags or drums in a cool, dry, dark and well-ventilated store, away from acids, acid chlorides and oxidisers. Keep packs closed between uses, as the solid darkens with air and light.

Do you provide COA and MSDS for PCA?

Yes, we provide a batch-specific COA and MSDS with every order, plus technical support on request.

Do you supply and export Para Chloro Aniline?

Yes, we supply PCA across India and export internationally with complete documentation, sourced from reliable manufacturers.
