Product overview

What is Para Toluidine?

Para Toluidine (p-toluidine, 4-methylaniline, PT) is the para isomer of the three toluidines — aniline carrying a methyl group opposite the amine. It is a workhorse pigment and dye intermediate: sulphonated to 4B acid for Lithol Rubine, or nitrated to 4-methyl-2-nitroaniline for Toluidine Red and Hansa Yellow. It is also used for agrochemicals and for amine accelerators in resins and adhesives.

With the formula C7H9N (CAS 106-49-0), PT forms colourless to light-yellow lustrous flakes that melt at about 44 °C — so it is handled as a solid but easily melted for charging. It is made by reducing 4-nitrotoluene, the same nitro-reduction route used for Para Chloro Aniline.

Unlike the liquid ortho and meta isomers, the symmetrical para isomer is a solid, and buyers specify it by assay, setting point and residual o- and m-toluidine — the isomers most likely to shift shade in a pigment or selectivity in a synthesis.

How it is made

Toluene is nitrated to a mixture of nitrotoluenes, from which 4-nitrotoluene is separated. It is then reduced — by catalytic hydrogenation or iron reduction — to p-toluidine, which is purified by distillation and flaked.

What that means for your process

  • Free amino group for diazotisation, acylation and N-alkylation
  • Para position blocked by methyl — sulphonation and nitration go ortho to the amine
  • o- and m-Toluidine controlled to grade, checked by GC
  • Low-melting solid — easy to melt and charge as a liquid

Applications

What is Para Toluidine used for?

PT is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pigments, dyes, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and polymer additives. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:

Pigments & dyes

The main use. PT supplies the diazo component for several high-volume organic pigments.

  • 4B acid for Lithol Rubine (Pigment Red 57:1)
  • 4-Methyl-2-nitroaniline for Toluidine Red (PR 3) and Hansa Yellow G (PY 1)
  • Azo dye intermediates

Agrochemicals & pharma

Provides the p-tolyl group in selected crop-protection and pharmaceutical molecules.

  • Fungicide intermediates, e.g. the p-tolyl sulphamide for tolylfluanid
  • Building block for API and custom synthesis

Polymers & specialty

N-alkylated to the amine accelerators used to cure resins and adhesives.

  • N,N-Dimethyl-p-toluidine for acrylic, dental and bone-cement curing
  • Accelerators for unsaturated polyester resins
  • Reagent in analytical and research work

Process route

How is Para Toluidine used downstream?

PT enters a synthesis as the amine. It is sulphonated, nitrated (after protection) or N-alkylated, the intermediate is diazotised and coupled or finished directly, and the p-tolyl group carries through into the pigment, active or accelerator.

Safety

Is Para Toluidine hazardous?

Yes. p-Toluidine is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, may cause an allergic skin reaction, causes serious eye irritation, is suspected of causing cancer and is very toxic to aquatic life. It is absorbed through the skin and can cause methaemoglobinaemia. With correct PPE, ventilation and containment it is safely handled in industry.

PT should be stored in sealed containers in a cool, dry, dark and well-ventilated place away from acids, acid chlorides, anhydrides and strong oxidisers. Because it melts at about 44 °C, avoid hot stores that cause caking, and keep melting operations enclosed and ventilated. Prevent release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.

Signal word: Danger

Toxic by all routes · suspected carcinogen · very toxic to aquatic life

Safe-handling essentials

  • Chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing — PT is absorbed through the skin
  • Use local exhaust ventilation, especially when melting or charging
  • Keep containers sealed, cool and out of direct light
  • Store below its melting point (about 44 °C) to prevent caking
  • Store away from acids, acid chlorides, anhydrides and oxidisers
  • Never allow release to drains, soil or waterways
  • Transport as UN 3451 — a regulated dangerous good

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from buyers specifying Para Toluidine for pigment, dye, agrochemical and polymer production.

What is Para Toluidine used for?

PT is used mainly as a pigment and dye intermediate — via 4B acid for Lithol Rubine and via 4-methyl-2-nitroaniline for Toluidine Red and Hansa Yellow — and also for agrochemicals such as tolylfluanid, pharmaceuticals and N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine resin accelerators.

What is the CAS number of Para Toluidine?

The CAS number is 106-49-0 and the molecular formula is C7H9N. It is also known as p-toluidine, 4-methylaniline, 4-aminotoluene or p-methylaniline.

How is Para Toluidine manufactured?

By reducing 4-nitrotoluene, usually by catalytic hydrogenation. The nitrotoluene is made by nitrating toluene and separating the para isomer from ortho- and meta-nitrotoluene.

Is Para Toluidine hazardous?

Yes. It is toxic by ingestion, skin contact and inhalation, a skin sensitiser, suspected of causing cancer and very toxic to aquatic life. It must be handled with proper PPE, ventilation and containment; we supply a full MSDS with every order.

What is the difference between para, ortho and meta toluidine?

They differ in where the methyl group sits. o- and m-Toluidine are liquids; the more symmetrical p-toluidine is a solid melting near 44 °C. o-Toluidine goes mostly into herbicide anilines such as methyl ethyl aniline, while p-toluidine goes mostly into pigments, dyes and accelerators.

How should Para Toluidine be stored?

In sealed drums or bags in a cool, dry, dark and well-ventilated store, away from acids and oxidisers. Keep it below its melting point (about 44 °C) to avoid caking, and keep packs closed, as the solid darkens with air and light.

Do you provide COA and MSDS for PT?

Yes, we provide a batch-specific COA and MSDS with every order, plus technical support on request.

Do you supply and export Para Toluidine?

Yes, we supply PT across India and export internationally with complete documentation, sourced from reliable manufacturers.
