Product overview
What is Para Nitro Chloro Benzene?
Para Nitro Chloro Benzene (PNCB) is a chlorinated nitroaromatic used as a base intermediate for dyes, rubber chemicals, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. The chlorine atom sits directly opposite the nitro group, which activates it for substitution by amines, alkoxides and hydroxide.
With the formula C6H4ClNO2 (CAS 100-00-5), PNCB is a pale yellow crystalline solid that melts at about 83 °C and is practically insoluble in water. It is made by nitrating chlorobenzene, which gives a mixture of the para and ortho isomers that are then separated.
Because the para-nitro group activates the chlorine so strongly, PNCB converts cleanly to p-nitroaniline, p-nitrophenol, p-nitroanisole and 4-nitrodiphenylamine — which is why buyers specify it by ortho- and meta-isomer content as closely as by assay.
How it is made
Chlorobenzene is nitrated with mixed nitric and sulfuric acid, giving roughly two parts para- to one part ortho-nitrochlorobenzene with a little meta isomer. The isomers are separated by a combination of crystallisation and fractional distillation.
What that means for your process
- Activated chlorine for clean nucleophilic substitution
- Low ortho- and meta-isomer content, checked by GC
- Low moisture and acidity for stable storage
- Flaked or molten form to suit your charging system
Applications
What is Para Nitro Chloro Benzene used for?
PNCB is used almost entirely as a chemical intermediate. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:
Rubber chemicals
Feeds the 4-aminodiphenylamine route to the antidegradants that protect tyres and rubber goods.
- Converted to 4-nitrodiphenylamine with aniline
- Hydrogenated to 4-ADPA, then to 6PPD and IPPD
- Also used for p-phenylenediamine
Dyes & pigments
A starting point for p-nitroaniline, p-anisidine and p-phenetidine, key azo dye and pigment intermediates.
- Ammonolysis to p-nitroaniline
- Methoxylation to p-nitroanisole, then p-anisidine
- Sulfur and azo dye intermediates
Pharmaceuticals & agrochemicals
Hydrolysed to p-nitrophenol and reduced to p-aminophenol and p-chloroaniline.
- p-Aminophenol for paracetamol
- p-Nitrophenol for organophosphate actives
- p-Chloroaniline for agro and pharma intermediates
Process route
How is PNCB used to make rubber antioxidants?
The largest single outlet for PNCB is the 4-aminodiphenylamine (4-ADPA) route. PNCB is condensed with aniline or formanilide to 4-nitrodiphenylamine, which is hydrogenated to 4-ADPA and then reductively alkylated to the PPD antidegradants used in tyres.
Para Nitro Chloro Benzene
Charged as the activated aryl chloride. Assay and ortho-isomer content decide downstream yield.
C6H4ClNO2Condensation
Reacted with aniline or formanilide in the presence of a base and catalyst.
Aniline / formanilide4-Nitrodiphenylamine
Hydrogenated over a catalyst to 4-aminodiphenylamine (4-ADPA).
4-ADPARubber antidegradant
Reductive alkylation with a ketone gives 6PPD or IPPD for tyres and rubber goods.

Safety
Is Para Nitro Chloro Benzene hazardous?
Yes. PNCB is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, is suspected of causing genetic defects and cancer, and can damage the blood through repeated exposure by causing methaemoglobinaemia. It is also toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
PNCB should be stored in sealed containers in a cool, dry, ventilated place away from heat, strong bases, reducing agents and oxidisers, and handled with chemical-resistant gloves, goggles, protective clothing and dust or vapour respiratory protection. Molten product must be handled in closed, heated systems. Prevent release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Common questions from buyers specifying PNCB for rubber chemical, dye, pharmaceutical and agrochemical production.
What is Para Nitro Chloro Benzene used for?
PNCB is used mainly to make 4-aminodiphenylamine for rubber antioxidants such as 6PPD, p-nitroaniline and p-anisidine for dyes, p-aminophenol for paracetamol, and p-nitrophenol and p-chloroaniline for agrochemical and pharmaceutical intermediates.
What is the CAS number of PNCB?
The CAS number is 100-00-5 and the molecular formula is C6H4ClNO2. It is also known as 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene, p-nitrochlorobenzene or 4-chloronitrobenzene.
How is PNCB made?
Chlorobenzene is nitrated with mixed acid, giving mainly para- and ortho-nitrochlorobenzene with a little meta isomer. The para isomer is separated by crystallisation and distillation.
Is Para Nitro Chloro Benzene hazardous?
Yes. It is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, is suspected of causing genetic defects and cancer, can cause methaemoglobinaemia, and is toxic to aquatic life. Handle it with full PPE, ventilation and containment; we supply a full MSDS with every order.
What is the difference between PNCB and ONCB?
Both come from the nitration of chlorobenzene. PNCB has the nitro group opposite the chlorine (para) and is a solid; ONCB has it next to the chlorine (ortho) and melts at about 32 °C. They lead to different downstream products, so the ortho content of PNCB is controlled tightly.
How should PNCB be stored?
In sealed bags or drums in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store, away from heat, strong bases, reducing agents and oxidisers. Molten PNCB must be kept in closed, heated and properly vented systems.
Do you provide COA and MSDS for PNCB?
Yes, we provide a batch-specific COA and MSDS with every order, plus technical support on request.
Do you supply and export Para Nitro Chloro Benzene?
Yes, we supply PNCB across India and export internationally with complete dangerous-goods documentation, sourced from reliable manufacturers.
