Product overview
What is 3,4-Dichloroaniline?
3,4-Dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) is an aromatic amine used mainly as the key intermediate for phenylurea and anilide herbicides — diuron, linuron, neburon and propanil — as well as for dyes, pigments and pharmaceutical intermediates. The chlorine atoms at the 3- and 4-positions are what give these actives their stability and soil persistence.
With the formula C6H5Cl2N (CAS 95-76-1), 3,4-DCA is a light tan to grey-brown crystalline solid produced by catalytic hydrogenation of 3,4-dichloronitrobenzene. It is sensitive to prolonged heat, light and air and darkens in storage, which is why sealed, cool, dark storage is specified.
Because the amino group is free and both chlorines are meta and para to it, 3,4-DCA reacts cleanly with phosgene, acid chlorides and diazotising agents — the three routes that account for almost all of its industrial consumption.
How it is made
3,4-DCA is obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of 3,4-dichloronitrobenzene under pressure over noble-metal catalysts, with additives that suppress dehalogenation and corrosion-resistant reactors.
What that means for your process
- Free amino group for phosgenation, acylation and diazotisation
- Chlorine positions fixed at 3 and 4 for consistent active yield
- Isomer and dechlorinated content controlled to grade, checked by GC
- Low moisture (0.5% max) for stable storage and handling
Applications
What is 3,4-Dichloroaniline used for?
3,4-Dichloroaniline is used primarily as a chemical intermediate. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:
Herbicides
The main use. 3,4-DCA is the aniline behind the phenylurea and anilide herbicide families.
- Core intermediate for diuron, linuron and neburon
- Acylated with propionyl chloride to give propanil
- Routed through 3,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate for the ureas
Dyes & pigments
Diazotised and coupled to build azo dyes and organic pigments with good fastness.
- Diazo component in azo colourant synthesis
- Intermediate for dye and pigment bases
Pharmaceuticals & fine chemicals
Used as a building block in API synthesis, including the antimalarial chlorproguanil, and in custom synthesis.
- Intermediate for pharmaceutical actives
- Custom synthesis and research scale-up
Process route
How is 3,4-Dichloroaniline used in herbicide manufacturing?
For the phenylurea herbicides, 3,4-DCA is converted to 3,4-dichlorophenyl isocyanate and then reacted with an amine — dimethylamine gives diuron, N-methoxy-N-methylamine gives linuron. For propanil, the same aniline is acylated directly with propionyl chloride, skipping the isocyanate step.

Safety
Is 3,4-Dichloroaniline hazardous?
Yes. 3,4-Dichloroaniline is a toxic aromatic amine and must be handled with care. It is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, causes serious eye damage, may cause an allergic skin reaction, and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. With correct PPE, ventilation and containment it is safely handled in industry.
3,4-DCA should be stored in sealed containers in a cool, dark, ventilated place away from heat, light, acids and oxidisers — it is incompatible with acid chlorides and anhydrides and decomposes at low pH. Prevent release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.
Signal word: Danger
