What is Mono Chloro Benzene?

Mono Chloro Benzene — MCB, or simply chlorobenzene — is a colourless liquid with a faint almond-like odour, produced by the catalytic chlorination of benzene.

It is the entry point to a large part of the chlorinated aromatics chain. Nitration converts it into the ortho and para nitrochlorobenzenes, which in turn lead to the nitroanilines, chloroanilines, and anisidines that dominate dye, pigment, and agrochemical intermediate manufacture.

Storage and guidelines

  • 01Store in tightly sealed original containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated store.
  • 02Treat as a flammable liquid — the flash point is 28°C, below many summer warehouse temperatures.
  • 03Eliminate ignition sources, use explosion-protected equipment, and earth and bond all containers and lines during transfer.
  • 04Segregate from strong oxidising agents, strong bases, and active metals such as aluminium and magnesium powder.
  • 05Use compatible materials: carbon steel, stainless steel, or lined vessels; check elastomer seal compatibility.
  • 06Bund all bulk storage and prevent any release to drains, surface water, or soil.

Handling precautions

MCB is a flammable liquid with a flash point of 28°C. In a warm store the vapour above the liquid can be within the flammable range, so ignition source control is the primary hazard control.

It is harmful if inhaled or swallowed, causes skin irritation, and may cause drowsiness or dizziness at elevated vapour concentrations. Use closed transfer and effective ventilation.

The almond-like odour is not a reliable warning of hazardous concentrations and should never be used to judge exposure.

Chlorinated aromatics decompose in a fire to produce hydrogen chloride and other hazardous combustion products. Fire-fighters require full breathing apparatus.

The product is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Bunding, containment, and drain protection are essential at every handling point.

How is chlorobenzene manufactured?

By chlorinating benzene over a Lewis acid catalyst. The reaction also produces dichlorobenzenes, which are separated by distillation, so the dichloro content of the finished product is a standard specification.

What does MCB become downstream?

Why is the flash point so important for this product?

At 28°C it sits below normal summer ambient in many locations, so the material is genuinely flammable in storage rather than merely combustible. Explosion-protected equipment, bonding, and earthing are required rather than optional.

Why is benzene content specified?

Residual benzene from incomplete conversion is both a quality issue and a health one, since benzene carries a stricter classification than chlorobenzene. Keeping it low protects downstream product quality and workplace exposure.

Is it soluble in water?

Practically insoluble, and it is denser than water so a spill will sink rather than float. It is miscible with alcohols, ethers, and most organic solvents.

What materials of construction are suitable?

Carbon steel, stainless steel, and lined vessels in normal service. Elastomer seals should be checked, since chlorinated aromatics swell many common rubbers. Avoid contact with aluminium and magnesium powder.

What purity do you supply?

Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 99.9% with benzene at or below 0.05% and moisture at or below 0.03%. Tighter specifications can be produced to a customer specification sheet.
