What is 2,5-Dichloro Nitro Benzene?
2,5-Dichloro Nitro Benzene — 25DCNB — is a pale yellow crystalline solid produced by nitrating para dichlorobenzene, which places the nitro group on the only positions available between the two chlorines.
Its role is almost entirely as a precursor. Hydrogenation gives 2,5-dichloroaniline, the diazo component that anchors a family of azo pigments, and the chlorine positions established at the nitration stage carry through unchanged into the finished colour.

What is 2,5-Dichloro Nitro Benzene used for?
Principally as the precursor to 2,5-dichloroaniline, which goes into azo pigments and dyes. It also serves agrochemical and specialty chemical routes needing a dichlorinated aromatic core.
How is 25DCNB manufactured?
By nitrating para dichlorobenzene. Because the two chlorines occupy the 1 and 4 positions, the nitro group can only enter beside one of them, which makes the reaction unusually clean compared with other dichlorobenzene nitrations.
Why is this nitration more selective than others?
Symmetry. Para dichlorobenzene has only one type of available position, so nitration gives essentially one product. Nitrating the ortho isomer, by contrast, produces a mixture of 3,4- and 2,3-dichloronitrobenzene that must be separated.
What is the relationship between 25DCNB and 25DCA?
25DCNB is the nitro compound and 2,5-dichloroaniline is what you get by reducing it. Both are supplied in this range, and the nitro specification sets the ceiling on the amine's purity.
How does it differ from 3,4- and 2,3-dichloronitrobenzene?
All three share the formula C6H3Cl2NO2 and a weight of 192.00, differing only in chlorine placement. 25DCNB leads to pigments, 34DCNB to herbicides, and 23DCNB to pharmaceutical and agrochemical routes.
Is it soluble in water?
No. It is practically insoluble in water but dissolves in alcohols, ether, acetone, and aromatic solvents, so downstream chemistry runs in organic media or on the melt.
Why does the flake cake in the bag?
The melting point is around 55°C, so material stored in a hot warehouse can soften and fuse. Cool, palletised storage out of direct sun prevents this without affecting assay.
