What is N,N-Diethyl Aniline?
N,N-Diethyl Aniline — DEA — is a colourless to yellow-brown liquid with two ethyl groups on the nitrogen. It is a tertiary amine with no N–H remaining.
Fully alkylating the nitrogen pushes electron density strongly into the ring, which is exactly what triarylmethane and xanthene chromophores need. The same electron-rich nitrogen makes the molecule an effective accelerator for peroxide-initiated resin cure, and a useful acid scavenger in synthesis.

Handling precautions
DEA is toxic by inhalation, ingestion, and skin absorption. It is for industrial use by trained personnel only.
Aromatic amines are absorbed through intact skin and can affect the blood by forming methaemoglobin. Chemical-resistant gloves, coveralls, and eye protection are required.
Never store or mix directly with organic peroxides. The accelerating effect that makes this product useful in resin cure means direct contact with concentrated peroxide can be violent; the two are always added separately to the resin.
The product is combustible above its flash point of 85°C. Keep away from ignition sources and earth equipment during transfer.

What is N,N-Diethyl Aniline used for?

How does it differ from N,N-dimethylaniline?
Only in the alkyl groups: two ethyls rather than two methyls. Both are tertiary amines used in similar roles, but they give different shades in dye chemistry and different cure kinetics, and DMA is the more volatile of the two.
How does it work as a cure accelerator?
Tertiary aromatic amines react with organic peroxides to generate free radicals at room temperature, letting a resin cure without heating. This is the basis of self-curing acrylic and polyester systems.
Why must it never be mixed directly with peroxide?
The same reaction that gives controlled cure becomes violent when amine and concentrated peroxide meet neat. Both components are always added separately to the resin and stored apart.
Why is residual aniline specified?
Aniline and monoethylaniline are primary and secondary amines that react differently in dye synthesis, producing off-shade components, and they alter cure kinetics. Controlling them protects both applications.
Is it soluble in water?
Practically insoluble. It dissolves readily in alcohols, esters, ethers, and aromatic hydrocarbons, and is miscible with most resin systems.
Why does the liquid darken during storage?
Tertiary aromatic amines oxidise on contact with air and light. Nitrogen blanketing and cool, dark storage slow it considerably, and moderate colour usually does not affect assay.
What purity do you supply?
Standard technical grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 99.5% with residual aniline at or below 0.2% and water at or below 0.2%. Tighter specifications can be manufactured for cure-critical use.

Is DEA hazardous?
Yes. It is toxic by several routes, absorbed through skin, combustible above 85°C, and reacts vigorously with peroxides. Engineering controls, PPE, and segregation all apply.
