Product overview

What is Para Fluoro Aniline?

Para Fluoro Aniline (4-fluoroaniline, PFA) is a fluorinated aromatic amine used mainly as a building block in pharmaceutical synthesis — particularly for anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory actives — and in agrochemical and dye manufacture. The para fluorine is carried through the whole synthesis, where it tunes metabolic stability and binding.

With the formula C6H6FN (CAS 371-40-4), PFA is a clear liquid that darkens with air and light. It is produced mainly by catalytic hydrogenation of 4-fluoronitrobenzene, with one-step routes from nitrobenzene also described in the literature.

Because the amino group is free and the fluorine is para to it, PFA acylates, alkylates and condenses cleanly — which is why API and agrochemical producers specify it by assay and colour as closely as by isomer content.

How it is made

The usual two-step route nitrates and fluorinates to 4-fluoronitrobenzene, which is then reduced by catalytic hydrogenation to the aniline. One-step routes from nitrobenzene using reductive fluorination are also documented.

What that means for your process

  • Free amino group for acylation, condensation and diazotisation
  • Para fluorine retained intact through downstream steps
  • Isomer content and aniline residue controlled to grade, checked by GC
  • Low moisture and low colour for stable storage and handling

Applications

What is Para Fluoro Aniline used for?

PFA is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, dyes and pesticides. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:

Pharmaceuticals

The main use. PFA is a standard entry point for fluorinated drug scaffolds.

  • Key intermediate for anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory actives
  • Building block for fluorinated heterocycles and anilides
  • Used in API and intermediate custom synthesis

Agrochemicals

Supplies the fluorinated aniline fragment used across modern crop-protection actives.

  • Intermediate for selected pesticides
  • Supplied to formulators and synthesis units

Dyes & fine chemicals

Diazotised and coupled where a fluorine substituent improves shade and fastness.

  • Diazo component for fluorinated dyes
  • Reagent and building block in analytical and research work

Process route

How is Para Fluoro Aniline used downstream?

PFA enters a synthesis as the amine. It is acylated or condensed to build an anilide or heterocyclic core, the ring system is elaborated, and the fluorine rides through untouched into the finished active — which is exactly why it is chosen over unsubstituted aniline.

Safety

Is Para Fluoro Aniline hazardous?

Yes. 4-Fluoroaniline is harmful if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, causes severe skin burns and eye damage, may cause an allergic skin reaction, can damage organs through prolonged or repeated exposure, and is toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. With correct PPE, ventilation and containment it is safely handled in industry.

PFA should be stored in sealed containers in a cool, dark, ventilated place away from acids, acid chlorides, anhydrides, chloroformates and strong oxidisers. It is combustible and darkens with air and light, so nitrogen blanketing is recommended for long storage. Prevent release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.

Signal word: Danger

Corrosive to skin and eyes · harmful by all routes · toxic to aquatic life

Safe-handling essentials

  • Chemical-resistant gloves, face shield and goggles — the liquid burns skin
  • Work with local exhaust ventilation; avoid breathing vapour or mist
  • Keep drums sealed, cool and out of direct light
  • Blanket with nitrogen for extended storage to limit colour gain
  • Store away from acids, acid chlorides, anhydrides and oxidisers
  • Never allow release to drains, soil or waterways
  • Transport as UN 2941 — a regulated dangerous good

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from buyers specifying Para Fluoro Aniline for pharmaceutical, agrochemical and dye production.

What is Para Fluoro Aniline used for?

PFA is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals — notably anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory actives — as well as agrochemicals, dyes and fine chemicals.

What is the CAS number of Para Fluoro Aniline?

The CAS number is 371-40-4 and the molecular formula is C6H6FN. It is also known as PFA, 4-fluoroaniline or 1-amino-4-fluorobenzene.

How is Para Fluoro Aniline manufactured?

Mainly by catalytic hydrogenation of 4-fluoronitrobenzene. One-step routes that reduce and fluorinate nitrobenzene directly are also described in the literature.

Is Para Fluoro Aniline hazardous?

Yes. It is harmful by ingestion, skin contact and inhalation, causes severe skin burns and eye damage, and is toxic to aquatic life. It must be handled with proper PPE, ventilation and containment; we supply a full MSDS with every order.

Why is the fluorine substituent useful?

A para fluorine changes how the finished molecule behaves — it is small, strongly electron-withdrawing and resists metabolism, which is why fluorinated anilines are so common in modern drug and crop-protection molecules.

How should PFA be stored?

In sealed drums or tanks in a cool, dark, well-ventilated store, away from acids, acid chlorides and oxidisers. The liquid darkens with air and light, so a nitrogen blanket is recommended for long holding.

Do you provide COA and MSDS for PFA?

Yes, we provide a batch-specific COA and MSDS with every order, plus technical support on request.

Do you supply and export Para Fluoro Aniline?

Yes, we supply PFA across India and export internationally with complete documentation, sourced from reliable manufacturers.
