Product overview

What is 1,2,4-Trichloro Benzene?

1,2,4-Trichloro Benzene (1,2,4-TCB) is a high-boiling chlorinated aromatic used as a dye carrier, a thermally stable process solvent and a feedstock for dichloroaniline chemistry. It is the most widely used of the three trichlorobenzene isomers.

With the formula C6H3Cl3 (CAS 120-82-1), 1,2,4-TCB is a clear colourless liquid that boils at about 213 °C, freezes near 17 °C and is practically insoluble in water while mixing freely with most organic solvents. It is made by the further chlorination of benzene or dichlorobenzene, with the isomers separated by distillation and crystallisation.

Its combination of a high boiling point, low water solubility and good solvency is what makes it useful: it dissolves disperse dyes and polyolefins that most solvents will not touch, and the three ring chlorines give chemists a handle for selective substitution to dichloroanilines.

How it is made

Benzene or dichlorobenzene is chlorinated in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, producing a mixture of trichlorobenzene isomers dominated by the 1,2,4 isomer. The crude mixture is separated by fractional distillation and crystallisation, and the 1,2,4 cut is dried and polished to specification.

What that means for your process

  • Tightly controlled 1,2,3- and 1,3,5-isomer content, checked by GC
  • Low moisture and low acidity for stable storage in mild steel
  • Low colour (Hazen) for dye-carrier and solvent duty
  • Supplied in drums, IBCs or bulk tankers to suit your charging system

Applications

What is 1,2,4-Trichloro Benzene used for?

1,2,4-TCB is used both as a performance solvent and as a chemical intermediate. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:

Dye carriers & textiles

A classic carrier for dyeing polyester and polyester blends with disperse dyes at atmospheric pressure.

  • Swells polyester fibre so dye can penetrate
  • Used in carrier blends for atmospheric dyeing
  • Low water solubility keeps it in the carrier phase

Dye & agrochemical intermediates

Ammonolysis gives 2,5-dichloroaniline, a building block for azo pigments and crop-protection actives.

  • Ammonolysis to 2,5-dichloroaniline
  • Nitration to trichloronitrobenzene derivatives
  • Feedstock for dichloroaniline-based actives

Process solvent & heat transfer

A thermally stable, high-boiling solvent for reactions, cleaning and heat-transfer duty.

  • High-temperature reaction and recrystallisation solvent
  • Dielectric and heat-transfer fluid formulations
  • Mobile phase for high-temperature GPC of polyolefins

Process route

How is 1,2,4-TCB used to make 2,5-dichloroaniline?

The principal synthetic outlet for 1,2,4-TCB is the 2,5-dichloroaniline (2,5-DCA) route. The trichlorobenzene is aminated with ammonia under pressure to displace one ring chlorine, and the resulting dichloroaniline is diazotised and coupled into azo pigments and dyes, or taken on to agrochemical actives.

Safety

Is 1,2,4-Trichloro Benzene hazardous?

Yes — though less acutely toxic than the nitroaromatics, 1,2,4-TCB is harmful if swallowed, irritating to skin and eyes, may irritate the respiratory tract, and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. It is a combustible liquid with a flash point around 110 °C.

1,2,4-TCB should be stored in sealed drums, IBCs or tanks in a cool, dry, ventilated place away from heat, ignition sources, strong oxidisers and strong bases, and handled with chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing, with local exhaust ventilation where vapour or mist can form. Because of its aquatic toxicity, bunding and spill containment matter as much as personal protection. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.
