Product overview
What is 2,4-Dichloroaniline?
2,4-Dichloroaniline (2,4-DCA) is a dichlorinated aromatic amine — aniline with chlorines ortho and para to the amino group — used as an intermediate for agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and azo colours. It supplies the 2,4-dichlorophenyl-amino fragment to actives such as the fungicide imibenconazole, and is reported as a raw material in routes to fluoroquinolone antibacterials.
With the formula C6H5Cl2N (CAS 554-00-7), 2,4-DCA is an off-white to beige crystalline solid melting at about 60 °C. It is produced mainly by hydrogenating 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene. It is one of six dichloroaniline isomers — the best-known sibling being 3,4-dichloroaniline, the herbicide aniline — and the dichloro analogue of Para Chloro Aniline.
Both chlorines survive downstream chemistry intact, so the isomer you buy is the isomer you get in the finished molecule — which is why producers specify 2,4-DCA closely by assay, by the 2,6-isomer and by monochloroanilines formed through over-reduction.
How it is made
1,3-Dichlorobenzene is nitrated to 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene, which is then hydrogenated over a catalyst chosen to limit dechlorination. The crude amine is distilled and flaked. Chlorination of acetanilide followed by hydrolysis is an alternative route.
What that means for your process
- Free amino group for acylation, diazotisation and condensation
- Both ring chlorines retained intact through downstream steps
- 2,6-Isomer and monochloroanilines controlled to grade, checked by GC
- Low moisture and colour for clean reactions and stable storage

Safety
Is 2,4-Dichloroaniline hazardous?
Yes. 2,4-Dichloroaniline is toxic if swallowed, in contact with skin or if inhaled, causes serious eye damage, may cause an allergic skin reaction, may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure and is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Like other chloroanilines it can cause methaemoglobinaemia. With correct PPE, ventilation and containment it is safely handled in industry.
2,4-DCA should be stored in sealed containers in a cool, dry, dark and well-ventilated place away from acids, acid chlorides, anhydrides and strong oxidisers. Keep it well below its melting point (about 60 °C) to prevent caking. Prevent release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.
