Product overview

What is Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene?

Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene (PFNB) is a fluorinated nitroaromatic used mainly as the precursor of 4-fluoroaniline and as an activated aryl fluoride for nucleophilic substitution. The fluorine opposite the nitro group is displaced readily by amines, phenols and thiols.

With the formula C6H4FNO2 (CAS 350-46-9), PFNB is a pale yellow liquid that solidifies at about 21–24 °C and is practically insoluble in water. It is made from PNCB by halogen exchange with potassium fluoride.

Because fluoride is an excellent leaving group when activated by a para-nitro group, PFNB reacts faster and more cleanly than PNCB in substitution reactions — which is why pharmaceutical customers specify residual PNCB as closely as assay.

How it is made

PNCB is heated with anhydrous potassium fluoride in a polar aprotic solvent such as sulfolane or DMSO, often with a phase-transfer catalyst. The chlorine is exchanged for fluorine, and PFNB is purified by distillation.

What that means for your process

  • Highly activated fluorine for fast substitution
  • Low residual PNCB, checked by GC
  • Low moisture for anhydrous reactions
  • Liquid or solid supply to suit your charging system

Applications

What is Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene used for?

PFNB is used almost entirely as a chemical intermediate. Its main applications, industry by industry, include:

Pharmaceuticals

Reduced to 4-fluoroaniline, or used directly to attach a 4-nitrophenyl group to amines and phenols.

  • 4-Fluoroaniline for API synthesis
  • 4-Nitrophenyl piperazines and ethers by substitution
  • Fluorinated building blocks for drug discovery

Agrochemicals

4-Fluoroaniline from PFNB is the aniline building block for several crop-protection actives.

  • Precursor of 4-fluoroaniline
  • Route to the N-(4-fluorophenyl) amide herbicide flufenacet
  • Fluorinated fungicide and insecticide intermediates

Dyes, polymers & fine chemicals

Used in dye intermediates, high-performance polymer monomers and custom synthesis.

  • Nitrodiphenyl ether and amine intermediates
  • Custom synthesis and research scale-up

Process route

How is PFNB used to make 4-fluoroaniline?

PFNB is reduced to 4-fluoroaniline by catalytic hydrogenation. 4-Fluoroaniline is then built into pharmaceutical and agrochemical actives — for example by N-alkylation and acylation to give the herbicide flufenacet.

Safety

Is Para Fluoro Nitro Benzene hazardous?

Yes. PFNB is toxic if inhaled, harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin, and may cause damage to the blood through repeated exposure by causing methaemoglobinaemia. It is also harmful to aquatic life. With correct PPE, ventilation and storage it is safely handled in industry.

PFNB should be stored in sealed containers in a cool, dry, ventilated place away from heat, strong bases, reducing agents and oxidisers, and handled with gloves, goggles and vapour respiratory protection. Prevent release to drains and waterways. A full MSDS is supplied with every order.

Safe-handling essentials

  • Chemical-resistant gloves, goggles and protective clothing at all times
  • Vapour respirator; use local exhaust ventilation
  • Avoid skin contact — PFNB is absorbed through the skin
  • Keep drums sealed, cool and dry
  • Store away from strong bases, reducing agents and oxidisers
  • Never allow release to drains, soil or waterways
  • Transport as a class 6.1 toxic substance — UN entry stated on the SDS
