What is Ortho Nitro Anisole?

Ortho Nitro Anisole — 2-nitroanisole — is a yellow to orange liquid, or low-melting solid in a cool store, carrying a methoxy group next to a nitro group on a benzene ring. It is made by methoxylating ortho nitrochlorobenzene.

Its role is almost entirely as a precursor. Reducing the nitro group gives o-anisidine, one of the classical dye and pigment intermediates, and the methoxy group carries through unchanged into the finished colour.

How is it manufactured?

By methoxylation of ortho nitrochlorobenzene: methoxide displaces the chlorine that the neighbouring nitro group has activated. The isomer purity of the ONCB feed carries through to the finished product.

What does the abbreviation ONA refer to?

This is a common source of confusion. ONA is widely used for ortho nitroaniline, CAS 88-74-4, and is sometimes also applied to ortho nitroanisole, CAS 91-23-6. They are different products. Always order against the CAS number rather than the abbreviation.

How does it differ from ortho nitroaniline?

Ortho nitroaniline carries an amino group next to the nitro; this product carries a methoxy group. Nitroaniline is an orange solid used as a dye base and benzimidazole precursor, while nitroanisole is a liquid used to make o-anisidine.

Is it a liquid or a solid?

It depends on the temperature. The melting point is around 9 to 11°C, so drums may arrive solid in winter and liquid otherwise. Warm gently and evenly before transfer.
