What is Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline?

Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline — PCONA, or 4-chloro-2-nitroaniline — is an orange-yellow crystalline solid carrying an amino group with a nitro group beside it and a chlorine opposite. It is produced by aminating 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene.

All three substituents earn their place in the finished colour. The nitro group deepens the shade and improves lightfastness, the chlorine adds fastness and shifts the hue, and the amine is the diazotisation site. The combination is why this base has held its position in pigment chemistry for decades.

What is Para Chloro Ortho Nitro Aniline used for?

It is an azo colour base, used mainly as a diazo component in red and orange pigment manufacture and in azoic dyeing. It also serves pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediate synthesis.

How is PCONA manufactured?

By ammonolysis of 2,4-dichloronitrobenzene, in which ammonia displaces the chlorine activated by the neighbouring nitro group. The remaining chlorine, being unactivated, stays in place.

Why does one chlorine react and the other not?

Only the chlorine ortho to the nitro group is activated toward nucleophilic substitution. The other sits para to the nitro but is deactivated once the amine is installed, so it survives into the finished product.

What does each substituent contribute to the colour?

The amine is the diazotisation site. The nitro group deepens the shade and improves lightfastness. The chlorine shifts the hue and improves wash and solvent fastness in the finished pigment.

Is it soluble in water?

Only slightly. It dissolves in alcohols, acetone, and dilute mineral acid, and acid dissolution is the normal first step before diazotisation.

Why is the powder orange?

The colour comes from the electronic interaction between the electron-donating amine and the electron-withdrawing nitro group across the ring. The intense colour is intrinsic and is not an indication of impurity.

What purity do you supply?

Standard grade is supplied at a minimum assay of 99% with isomer content at or below 0.5% and moisture at or below 0.5%. Tighter specifications can be produced to order.
